About the time the first radio entertained across the nation, and the automobile was becoming more and more the transportation of choice, and the telephone was eliminating distance ... YOU arrived.
Your childhood and the Great Depression occurred in the same decade, and despite hard times, you created new professions. Then came the most heinous war in history. Destructive forces entered the World by way of the Third Reich and Japanese Imperialism, and you fought to create peace.
You navigated our course to successfully meet and overcome the challenge of Communism.
Then came Bigotry and Prejudice. You helped to start the march toward making equality a reality.
There were diseases. You came forth with new medicines.
There was poverty. Your humanity revived hope.
Under your capable leadership, Congress and other institutions throughout the land started to move away from being just one color and one gender and began to reflect more and more the real America.
Your energy entertained us with movies, plays, paintings and productions that captured our interest, tickled our funny bones, healed our hearts and stimulated our spirits.
You reached into the souls of your imagination and planted seeds of beauty, melody and inspiration, so that galleries, theaters and concert halls became uplifting cathedrals of culture.
You built bridges that united us and buildings that reached for the stars.
Throughout your life, while still being very human and capable of mistakes and poor judgment, more often than not, you met:
Confusion with Compassion,
Hatred with Humor,
Evil with Empathy,
Worry with Wisdom,
Fear with Faith,
Despair with Dedication,
Hopelessness with Humanity,
And especially…
you fought cruelty using an implement called Civility.
The Egyptians had their Pharaohs. The Greeks had their Gods.
The Romans had their Caesars. And they all failed and fell.
But we had You ... From all walks of life, from every country around the world, you joined together to promote and proudly protect this dream called America.
