Story of the Week: The Simple Gesture

Note from Jack:  I wrote the following story for the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. It was drawn from an experience that occurred during my teaching career. This story (which happened in 1973 at Oak Jr. High) has had a profound impact....I received over a 100 letters telling me how it saved them from making 'The Big Mistake' or caused them to reach out and help someone... It was the inspiration for the movie 'To Save A Life"...I love to tell this story, especially to young people who have not yet discovered their own self worth...

Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met.

"Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?" asked Bill.

"I just thought you were moving or something," Mark replied.

"Well, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. You see, I'd been kicked off the team, I was flunking Algebra, my girlfriend had broken up with me. I had stored away some of my mother's sleeping pills, and I was going home to commit suicide... Continue
