As a child, I was on the receiving end of my parents' negatively labeling me to shame, humiliate and guilt me into behaving: "problem child, too loud, show off, too talkative, too sensitive, a nuisance, a bother, trouble, stubborn, irresponsible..." (I was 4 years old when I was called irresponsible! Really?!)
My parents were much like the author on parenting whose first chapter of her NY Times best selling book is titled, Exposing the Brat Factor! ... in which she labels (vilifies) children with "attitude problems" by calling them...
"Selfish Sheila, the Terminator, Cruella De Vil, Napoleon Complex, Couch Potato, In Your Face, Mr. Bigot, Drama Queen, Little Princess, Mr. Fresh Prince, Con Artist, Donald Trump, Poor Me"
The only person with an attitude problem is any adult who uses labels like these. Here are a few more that I overheard at a restaurant recently, which I believe are going to create a significant disconnect for parent and child down the road: "My little bundle of trouble" and "My tiny terrorist."
I don't know about you, but if I was a child being called any of these names by my parents, siblings or teachers, I'd have a BIG HONKIN' attitude too! (In fact I DID have a problem with my parents labeling of me, and because of this, I never once labeled any of our children or any student I taught.)
These labels are not funny. They are attitudinally and energetically 100% inflammatory. They are ALL hurtful and harmful to the hearts, minds and souls of the children whose parents or teachers subscribe to this type of labeling. The same is true in the workplace and in our most intimate relationships.
And then, when individuals go POSTAL, we blame it on "mental illness," as if that explains everything, and everyone who has ever been involved in that person's life had nothing whatsoever to do with what accumulated repeatedly over time within that person's psyhe each time they were looked at with disdain, disapproval and disappointment.
If you want to keep your job, if you really love your children and spouse, stop labeling people negatively, and you will get a different result immediately!
So, by now I hope you are thinking, "There's GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY!" to work with people who are very difficult for me to communicate with... because I'm here to tell you, THERE IS!
