Dear Difference Maker,
I remember in high school, it was time to start planning for the Athletic Banquet, and the School Superintendent told us there wasn't enough money for streamers and decorations, not to mention no funding to put a teacher in charge to pull off the entire event.
So I raised my hand and said that I would do it! I would find a way to put on that year's Athletic Banquet. So I was put in charge, with the High School Principal agreeing to simply oversee and approve my activities.
I immediately envisioned a Sesame Street Theme...
I could SEE the entire length of the gym with hanging letters of the alphabet, so I went to the paper supply closet and, with permission, started pulling off 6 foot long sheets of paper in all of the primary colors, taking them to the Home Ec room, where I started drawing and cutting 6 foot letters of the entire alphabet.
I had the Shop Teacher hang a wire and, together with my team of 50 students, we hung letters along the full length of the gym. In searching through the school's supply closets, I had also found just enough left-over crepe paper from other events to hang streamers around the rest of the gym.
I sent another team of students out into the community to borrow garbage cans, street lamps and all the other kinds of decorations to make the entire gym look like people were walking onto Sesame Street.
It was a hit! And so it began for my life's work, stepping up to make a difference rather than w-a-i-t-i-n-g on "one day" to come ...
I raised my hand for our church when it was rapidly growing from 300 to 3,000 in just a few short years, and they needed someone to coordinate large scale fund raising banquets and events.
I raised my hand to help Camp Opportunity for At-Risk Kids run daily summer camp sessions with hundreds of emotionally wounded and abandoned kids for many years.
I raised my hand when Oregon Speakers Association was deep in the "red" and together we pulled up to $10K in the "black" in just one year.
I raised my hand for these and other necessary causes, even though I was a single parent managing raising my son all on my own 95% of the time....
Why am I telling you this?
Because now, once again, there is something I am raising my hand to do; something that I feel passionate about, that simply must be done.
I just believe in the power of many contributors to make great things happen.
