Note from Mary...

As you may know, this week is both Teacher Appreciation Week and Nurses Appreciation Week; and coming right up after this is appreciation days and weeks for many of our other unsung heroes: Police & Dispatchers, EMS & Firefighters and Armed Forces.

What are you doing about this? Anything? Have you acknowledged anyone today? ...lately?

I intend to sound like a broken record this year, because we simply MUST step up as ordinary individuals who can, in fact, create extraordinary impact in people's lives.

If you are down, out, blue, sad, depressed or disappointed in life or with others ... seriously ... LIFE is waiting on YOU to step more fully into your greatness.

Disappointment is a totally useless emotion, as is shame.

Disappointment is hurtful when you use it on others ... it's just a way to shame and guilt others by venting your upset with them and showing your need to control them. It serves no positive purpose.

When you direct your disappointment at yourself, it's just another great way to beat yourself up so you are totally incapacitated. It serves no positive purpose.

Disappointment in and of itself is simply a lack in faith. So stop using it to keep yourself or anyone else down. You can be concerned, you can realize you have more work to do, you can be affirmative:

"I have confidence in your inherent gifts, talents and abilities to learn from this and be successful the next time."

Now THAT's what I'm talking about!

The greatest cure in the world is to get OUT of your critical self, and start finding someone to say something appreciative to ... start with acknowledgment.

Listen to your intuition and just do it! You can turn a crappy day into a great day in 30 seconds or less ... and I'm just talking about your day... not to mention you may just save someone else's life!!!!

What you may not know...

...is that just this past week on the evening news they stated that we have an alarming crisis in the military like never before.

That there is a suicide attempt somewhere in the military every 18 hours!

Speaking of the state of the mind, our societies generational legacies of pain and need to escape social emotional woundedness...

What you may not know... is NBC news reported that recent research that questioned 47,000 students nationwide shows tobacco use is down, and so is alcohol abuse.

Binge drinking among High School Seniors is down:
in 1981 it was at 41% - 2011 is at 22%...

But that ...marijuana use among teenagers is at the highest rate in 30 years.

1-in-15 High School Seniors report using marijuana and emotionally "checking out" daily.

Have you watched any Reality TV lately? If you are an avid fan or simply catch the headlines being created by some of these shows, then you know that we've got more work to do on how we treat each other in this society.

Using the Power of Acknowledgment Increases Your Bottom Line - Excerpt from Make A Difference with the Power of Acknowledgment UTRAIN™ Program for Education.

HOW TO ACKNOWLEDGE
1. Recognize something good about that person. Draw them into a light and easy going conversation about what you've notice and appreciate about them; their strength, talent, smile, smarts, eyes, humor/wit, passion for something.

2. LISTEN to their response: If they say what's great about them is "nothing" … tell them it's not "nothing" to you and that it makes a difference to you.

3. Ask them how they are today. LISTEN to their response. Based on what they say, ask if there is something you can do to help. Ask if there is something they would like for you to SEE (visualize) and Believe for them?

4. Ask if it's OK for you to give them a hug, a pat on the shoulder or back, or give them a fist bump.

As you see their new Successes, Celebrate with them as often as you notice them!

NOTICE:
Now … what happened to your loneliness, anger, depression? What matters now? What does support feel like to you as you learn to give it away?

If you want support …give it away.

5. Go find another someone. It can be a person of any age. Give them your smile so they can have one of their own.

PLAN NOW to get this "Make A Positive Difference" Program on your In-service agenda now and you WILL see a synergizing effect over the entire campus.

People who learn to acknowledge others will feel good about themselves. When we teach our teams "how" to safely and effectively become more authentic through learning how to genuinely acknowledge others during a week, month and/or year long experiment in human kindness... they WILL do outstanding when it comes to being able to relax and "think" when working together and doing so, synergistically. Why? Because in an emotionally calm state of mind, the LIGHT IS ON and somebody is in there doing their work... with purposeful intent!
