It was 1971. I had left the teaching profession only to discover how much I loved it and desperately wanted to return, but I was facing a brick wall. This was a time when school districts were laying teachers off, not hiring then and those that were being hired were in the fields of math and science, certainly not drama. Also, because I had taught a number of years, it would be more expansive to hire me than a new teacher just out of college.
The school where I wanted to resume my teacher career was the most popular school in the district with great kids and a fantastic Principal, Edward J. Austin. I had been a fool. I hadn't appreciated how great my profession was. In business I had been a total washout. If there was a bad investment, I could find it. In fact, I was thinking about writing an autobiography with the title, "Gullible Travels."
So, there I was in Bob's Big Boy Restaurant, unemployed, almost broke and unable to blame anybody by myself.
As I approached the cashier to pay my check, a wonderful thought occurred to me. My hamburger was being digested. It was being turned into skin, bone, blood, nerve fiber, hair and eyes, and I had nothing to do with it. If I had a billion dollars, I couldn't build a laboratory or hire enough scientists to do what was being done inside my body for free. Then I realized that my heart was being made to beat by this same invisible power. It was like life saying, "I haven't condemned you. I will continue to fill you with energy and miracles no matter how many mistakes you make." I walked out into a new day thinking "God loves me." I may not have deserved it, but that didn't make any difference to this universal power. I knew I was blessed and designed for success.
