Day 23: To the Person in Sales

Note from Jack: Along with discipline, respect, integrity and love, my dad believed in freedom. A master salesman himself, he turned out a football coach, a television producer, a stockbroker and a drama teacher. He also taught us the value of salesmanship. Maybe someday, someone will make a movie where the salesman is a good guy. Until they do, I offer the following tribute in honor of George H. Schlatter, Sr., who once told me, "Son, I never sold a thing... I just used products to solve problems."

BEARERS OF THE GIFT
An excerpt from Gifts by the Side of the Road

Throughout the centuries, humanity has been blessed with Creators of Gifts in the fields of science, literature, philosophy, business, government, religion and technology.

But if it had not been for another group of heroes and heroines, we would have been deprived of these treasures. I speak of the bearers of the gifts, the salespeople.

Socrates created a path of reason through the use of questions, but it remained for his student, Plato, to sell the citizens of Greece on the fact that this was a road that lead to truth.

Creators such as Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Franklin envisioned a form of government that was based on the will of its citizens, but it was up to a salesman named Tom Paine to use his Common Sense to convince those very citizens that it was a dream worth fighting for.

The Scientifically creative people have brightened our roads with new inventions, but if it had not been for sales people, Edison's light bulb would have remained in his lab, Bell's telephone would have gathered dust on a shelf and Ford's automobile would have never left the garage.

From her dark, silent world, Helen Keller served us a banquet of love, beauty and wisdom. However it was Anne Sullivan who sold her the realization that her fingers could communicate those messages of hope and victory.

While England stood alone, suffered, fought and persevered against the mightiest Army and Air Force ever assembled up to that time, she never even considered surrender because a salesman named.

Winston Churchill convinced the entire nation that that time of hunger, destruction and death was its Finest Hour.

Moses parted the Red Sea, but a salesman named Aaron convinced the people to follow him across to the Promised Land.

Even the carpenter from Nazareth required the services of a salesman named Paul to solidify and send forth His message of love.

Without these bearers of the gift, no factory would be built, no crops would be harvested, no college would open its doors.
