Dear Difference Maker,

Do you know what I see when I look at that old 1934 Dodge on the cover of Gifts by the Side of the Road ...

I see romance!

I see a generation unlike any generation before...

I see the '30s and '40s, the black and white movies and the Glenn Miller Band. I see swing dancing and people eating pop corn and “making out” at the drive-in theater! I see heroic stories about war and nations of people pulling together… I see love, babies and families traveling to and from places. I see people building communities, working and traveling to family gatherings in that truck … with story after story being left by the side of the road for others to enjoy.

I see the three-act play, Our Town, by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It is a character story about an average town's citizens in the early twentieth century as depicted through their everyday lives (particularly George Gibbs, a doctor's son, and Emily Webb, the daughter of the town's newspaper editor and George's future wife). Using meta-theatrical devices, Wilder sets the play in a 1930s theater. He uses the actions of the Stage Manager to create the town of Grover's Corners for the audience. Scenes from its history between the years of 1901 and 1913 play out.

The author of our newest release, Gifts by the Side of the Road, John Wayne "Jack" Schlatter, just happened to have produced over 200 theater productions in his professional career, 20 of which were, Our Town.

I've enjoyed the theater my entire life, and I've done a lot of reading throughout my professional career and personal life, and I just have to say that I am totally smitten by Jack's vernacular style. Working with him on his 2nd edition of Gifts by the Side of the Road has been such an amazing process to experience how easily words flow out of him onto paper, woven into heartfelt concepts and human meaning.

It is almost like I am transported into a theater production right along side of him on a stage in Our Town.

A lot of the reading we do is either for escape or for personal development and work.

Gifts by the Side of the Road is a book that one can read just for the simple pleasure of enjoying a good read, while both "escaping" into the stories and working on your personal development.
