A Note from Mary about Jack...

Like many of you, I've been forwarded "The Simple Gesture" story in its various forms over the past several years. I was so moved by it that I wanted to turn it into one of our inspirational flash online movies, because I could see it as such a valuable presentation and motivational story to use for various audiences.

After two years of searching for him, I finally found him!

So, I want to tell you about this amazing man who greeted me with such open arms. Out of all of the authors I have promoted over the years, he embodies a vibe of pure caring, generosity, love and good will. He said that my contacting him had boosted his life! Well, I've got to say, as I read his "Gifts by the Side of the Road," I was the one who has been re-ignited and re-inspired by this man's eloquence, both in his writing and the "difference maker" that he is. Jack not only won the National Teacher of the Year award, he is an amazing light of humor, laughter and JOY.

THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENING IN MY LIFE
An excerpt from Gifts by the Side of the Road
by John Wayne "Jack" Schlatter

...one night my whole life changed in 45 minutes.

I had come home early from a party where hardly anyone had noticed I was there except for a couple of times when I made a fool of myself trying to get attention.

Like George Gobel once said about himself on “The Tonight Show,” I felt like the whole world was a tuxedo and I was a pair of brown shoes. (Or I felt like a duck trying to get the attention of swans.)

I walked into the living room where my mother was peacefully seated in front of a nice warm fire with our German Shepard lying at her feet.

Using that maternal radar mothers have, she sensed my real mood despite my smiling face. Knowing I couldn’t fool her, I broke down and told her of my frustration in trying to keep up with the frantic pace of my family and how empty I felt, after leaving the party for an hour, to discover when I returned that nobody had even noticed that I was gone.

She gave a gentle laugh, leaned back in her chair, and told me a story that knocked me out of my socks.
