I am in the unique position to be privy to many conversations going on this summer between adults about their children and grandchildren, and I will just comment that much of what I have been hearing coming out of people's mouths is very damaging to the development of young psyches ... yes even up to ages 20-23 and beyond!
Labeling our children's human - age appropriate - experiences in disparaging and demoralizing terms, only magnifies unwanted and unnecessary life experiences for us all!
As a society, we are big on describing each other - and our children - in terms of faults, i.e. labels, and thereby setting up the big disconnect! This disconnection is the basis of every unwanted behavior any parent fears, condemns, rejects and/or resists!
I recently connected with the leader of a father's organization to let him know about my book and how powerfully it can help men be the best fathers they can be... to which he replied that his organization only recognizes books for fathers and not parenting!
To which I replied:
How can parenting not be specific to fathers when fathers are most certainly parents and the very ones who need my message / information the most!
I've taken both of my husbands through this information in their fathering, i.e., parenting skills throughout our children's early and adolescent years.
Even though I divorced my first husband, his parenting connection to me did not end there, and it took me coaching him as needed to build a healed relationship with his son - our son. To his absolute credit, he became a great father and, he still lavishes his appreciation on me for just how integral my unconditional support and help was to him.

Even though our children are grown, my former husband still comments on the ways his father missed "connecting" with him in the ways of the heart that really, really would have mattered to him the most.
The leader of this fathers organization, as of the writing of this, has not yet responded to my reply, but this all really deepened my commitment to making a difference with fathers!
Just this past Father's Day, I called to acknowledge my former husband as a great dad, to which he lamented that he still - to this day - struggles with his belief that he has not been a good father, especially when our son gets sick (he just had been ill with a bronchial infection) because his dad would have accused him of being a wuss and told him to "buck up!"
My own husband commented that early in his parenting experience he had longed for connection with his two daughters (from his first marriage) but didn't know how until I helped him find it within himself. His father had been very verbally, psychologically abusive and dismissive, so that was his only training manual for fathering. He had to un-learn harmful methods of fathering and learn new, healing ways to connect from his heart that empowered and created a loving parental connection.
To this day, both of his daughters continue to lavish him with their appreciation for what a great dad he was and is to them.
