Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!!!

During this past Thanksgiving dinner we were having the usual warm table conversations, when I shared a humorous personal story and ended it with the invisible hammer gesture to the head saying, "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid" which got hearty laughter around the table.

As the evening went on, others' personal stories continued to flow, all ending with the invisible hammer gesture to the head saying, "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!" As we were driving home that night I realized how quickly so many had used the "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid" head-hammer gesture when sharing their stories. The individuals at the table - ranging in age 16-60 - all seemed to have a similar critical, self-depreciating talk in their heads! It is a common bond for us all.

After returning home that evening, all of the self-talk I had learned to do with myself started to flow out onto a notebook page, and I wrote easily all of the things I Say to Myself When ...

As a child, I had a most critical voice in my mind (sounded like my mother's voice!) that was so loud it was almost impossible for me to focus on anything academic. My first memory of starting to have difficulty with my reading comprehension began in 3rd grade. By 4th grade, it was determined that I was a "problem child." This label and difficulty focusing continued on through earning my Master's degree and even on into adulthood. In my teenage years, I suffered frequently from extensive migraines and issues with my immune system.

By my late thirties, I had learned that if I worked diligently on re-framing and re-labeling my "self-talk" I would feel better and better. I began a new habit. Every morning before starting to work, I would write a new story for my life. I would write about my preferences and spiritual affirmations from 15 minutes to an hour or more, as needed.

As I deliberately formed new neurological pathways in my mind, I steadily dissolved the debilitating migraines, improved my health, raised our family all while working toward my dreams and creating my right livelihood with the support of my husband. Since beginning this daily writing practice, I've enjoyed a finely tuned focus and comprehension ability, and I never get migraines any more unless I'm not taking good care of myself and getting enough rest!

I know I'm not the only one that has this situation going on in my head. When talking about what I was planning for my newest movie, my friend Susan Gibson of Gibson Communications Group, emailed me her story:

...If you think of all the children and adults that suffer with some level of depression, it just compounds the "I Don't Matter" conversation with that deafening internal dialogue.

As a young girl/child I was never main stream. My mother was clinically depressed and my dad was always gone working. My younger brother, well lets save that for another day! I gravitated to others for guidance, love, nurturing, etc. Mostly to be seen I guess. That I mattered.

There was a REASON I day-dreamed and gazed out the window in school. There was a reason I was victimized by bullies in school, there was a reason I wasn't popular, but no one knew.

Talking with you catapulted me back in time (I'm 54 years old) to a place where I was once again the child staring out the window wanting to escape her life. When the teachers would write on the report card:

Susan stares out the window and daydreams, Susan doesn't apply herself, Susan has potential as a student, but doesn't focus. All I heard was Susan Susan Susan....

But never anything that was kind and nurturing, only the lack of what I AM. I saw myself being taunted by the bully in the school playground playing 4 square.

Words have such power to either cripple and destroy or inspire, heal and re-direct to the greatness we all have in us. I hope this also helps what you are teaching.

Susan

We all know how important the messages we give ourselves are to making a difference in this life. So, every morning that you begin the day with just 15 minutes of deliberate, intentional writing in a notebook about "How you prefer things to be ..." will be a better day than the day before.

One-Page Miracle

Daniel G. Amen, M.D. clinical neuroscientist, child and adolescent psychiatrist, medical director of Amen Clinic in CA, and author of Change Your Brain Change Your Life, calls this kind of writing, "the One-Page Miracle." This one daily exercise will dramatically begin to improve any aspect of the brain that is in need of healing.

Whenever any of us embark upon an emotional healing, it's critical that we devote time to such a "compassionate practice" in order to be able to deal with whatever we are going through - whether it's self-criticism, depression, anxiety or frustration.

I invite you to begin EVERY day with WhatICanSayMovie.com and see just how much it begins to improve your energy and the quality of your life.

Repetition IS after all, the mother of all learning.

What I Can Say When I Talk to Myself Movie

Age 12 - Adult

Watching this 5-minute meditative movie once or even several times a day helps us tune in to our connection to our highest, best self. Everything that is loving and good and compassionate within you is re-ignited as your deliberately restructure the neurological pathways of your mind.

To this day, I still read spiritually uplifting material and I write every morning (15 minutes to an hour+) BEFORE turning on my computer! If I'm struggling with something, the very best thing I can do for myself is to pull out my notebook (I keep a notebook in my purse and car) and start writing about how I prefer that a situation, or condition, be. This one practice has helped me in every aspect of my life: order, focus, time, money, health, relationships and achieving goals that were bigger than me when I first began undertaking them.

If you need a new, innovative solution to an old worn out problem, this is exactly how you get the creative mechanism of your mind to start bringing you new, rich ideas!
